Trunk or Treat - Kennedy Elementary School

Friday night proved to be a busy night for the fire department.  In addition to answering calls around town, as well as Truck 7 responding to a structure fire in Plainfield, members were still able to support the Trunk or Treat event at Kennedy Elementary School.  FF Joe Altomare even assisted with manning the grill at the event.  A great night was had by all.

MVA - Clinton Avenue/Tompkins Avenue

Just after 7am, FD, PD, and EMS were called to the intersection of Clinton Avenue at Tompkins Avenue for an overturned tractor trailer with possible entrapment.   Thankfully, the driver was able to self-extricate prior to FD arrival.  The driver then made the FD aware that the truck was hauling a chemical, which was leaking due to the shifted load.  A special call was made to the Middlesex County Hazmat team to mitigate and clean up the spilled chemical.  All units cleared around 9:50pm that night.  Special thanks to Plainfield, Edison, Colonia, Iselin, and East Brunswick for providing assistance at the scene and cover the town at this extended operation.

MVA - Woodland Avenue/East Hendricks Boulevard

Shortly after 5pm, FD and EMS units were dispatched to Woodland Avenue where an SUV crashed into a utility pole, bring down live wires and overturning.  Because of the location of the MVA, Edison and Plainfield Fire units were also dispatched, but were released a short time later.  Engine 5 and Rescue 1 responded, and upon arrival, the driver and sole occupant of the SUV had already self-extricated and was being evaluated by PD.  Engine 5 remained on scene until the vehicle was removed by the on-duty tow.  Scene was turned over to PD and PSE&G.

Santa Returns to Make a Special Run to Franklin Avenue Residence

Santa Claus answered a special call on Saturday evening to the residence of Amanda VanderWerf of Franklin Avenue.  Amanda was at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia during the annual Santa Run hosted by the fire department.  Santa gathered his elves and was escorted to Amanda's house by members of the fire department to personally deliver her Christmas present.  Amanda received her present with all the grace one would expect, and got a hug from Santa as well.  Amanda also took the time to take a picture with members of the department.  The South Plainfield Fire Department would like to extend our sincerest thanks to Amanda's family for allowing us to participate in this event, and we wish Amanda all the best as she continues to recover.

Boiler Fire/Malfunction - Verizon Training Center

In the early morning hours, fire units responded to the Verizon Training Center at 6000 Hadley Road for a report of smoke coming from a building.  DC DelNegro arrived on-scene and advised responding units that the source of the smoke was coming from one of the standalone training houses located in the rear of the complex.  Access was made via gates at the end of New World Way.  The working fire signal was transmitted and Engine 5 dropped a 5" supply line at the gated entrance and stretched one 1 3/4" line into the structure.  Truck 7 arrived and set up on side A.  The fire was contained to the boiler room in the basement of the structure.  DC DelNegro in command.
